On Wednesday 2nd June we held the second running of the Cartlidge Cup Open Grand Prix, in memory of Tim Cartlidge, who was a Fireman and former Marshall at Mr Karting.
The Cartlidge Cup Open event was set up last year as a yearly charity race event, with Mr Karting donating £8 from every driver’s entry fee to the Fire Fighters Charity. The top three drivers overall in the event would win a trophy each, with the winner also receiving a very large perpetual trophy to be presented on a yearly basis with the previous winners names engraved on the base. The top 6 Firemen from the station Tim worked at also had a Grand Final with trophies and a perpetual trophy which lives at the station throughout the year.
We had a fabulous turn out of 37 drivers of varying abilities; with many of the drivers present either fire-fighters, who Tim worked with, or friends from when he worked as a part-time marshal at Mr Karting during his time studying at university. We also knew there would be a new champion this year as last years winner Neil Small was unable to make it, due to holiday commitment.
With the practice finished the heats commenced with some competitive and mostly fair driving, with everyone enjoying themselves. All the heats were hard fought with some very close racing, with some drivers setting very quick lap times. After the thirty seven heats finished, we had the two Grand Finals to look forward to, with top 6 points scorers overall from the heats taking part, along with the top 6 firemen.
The final result after a close race was in the following order:
1st Chris Gould
2nd Charlie Martin
3rd David Brinkley
4th Michael Pugh
5th Simon Beck
6th Ian Simmons
The latest round took place on Sunday 2nd May with Kyle Morby and Spencer Olds taking class victories. For the latest results and news visit the Junior Open GP page of our site.
